The short answer: choose by the area where the skin actually sits, and make sure the edge of the garment lands above or below that area, never across it. An open-bust torsette or a high-waisted brief with an anti-roll band works for belly skin, a mid-thigh faja or a waist-to-thigh shaper works when the skin continues onto the thighs, and a smoothing cami handles the back and bra line. Buy for today's measurements, and favour pieces with hooks or adjustable straps while you are still losing.
Why ordinary shapewear fails on loose skin
Most shapewear is designed for firm tissue. It assumes there is something solid to hold in, so the elastic edges can be narrow and the compression can be concentrated at the waist. Loose skin behaves differently. It moves, it folds, and it will find any gap in the garment and roll over it.
That is why the classic problems after weight loss are always the same three: a waistband that rolls down over the lower belly, leg hems that ride up and create a visible ridge mid-thigh, and a garment that gradually slides down over the course of a day because there is nothing to grip. None of these are sizing mistakes. They are edge placement mistakes.
Where the edge should sit
The single most useful rule: an edge should never land in the middle of the loose area. Put it above the skin, at the natural waist or just under the bra line, or below it, at mid-thigh where the leg is firmer. An edge in the middle is what creates the fold you can see through clothing.
| Where the loose skin sits | Style that works | Where the edge should land |
|---|---|---|
| Upper and lower belly | Open-bust torsette or bodysuit | Under the bra line, down past the hip |
| Below the navel only | High-waisted brief with anti-roll band | At the natural waist, above the skin |
| Belly onto the thighs | Mid-thigh faja or waist-to-thigh shaper | Under the bra line and at mid-thigh |
| Back and bra band | Smoothing cami | At the shoulder and at the hip |
If the loose skin hangs over the lower abdomen as an apron belly, our guide to shapewear for an apron belly covers why the top edge rolls and which picks stay put.
The picks, by body area
Each of these solves one placement problem. Read the area first, then the pick, rather than the other way around.

Firm hold or gentle smoothing?
Firmer is not better here. Loose skin needs holding, not squeezing, and a garment that is too strong will simply push the skin somewhere else. Match the level to the occasion.
| Level | What it feels like | Best used for | Wear time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gentle smoothing | A firm second skin, no pressure | Work, errands, daily wear | All day |
| Firm control | Noticeable hold at the waist | Fitted clothing, office days | Six to eight hours |
| Faja level | Strong, structured compression | Events, photos, fitted dresses | A few hours |
Sizing while you're still losing
Buy for the body you have this month. A garment bought two sizes down does not hold anything, it slides, and sliding fabric is what chafes loose skin. If you are losing steadily, prioritise adjustability over everything else: multi-row hooks, adjustable straps, and a wide size range are what let one piece follow you through a change of size.
Measure at the natural waist and the fullest part of the hip, and use the brand's own chart rather than your usual dress size. If you fall between two sizes with loose skin, the larger size in a firmer garment usually beats the smaller size in a softer one.
One more practical note: keep the skin itself in good condition. Clean, dry and moisturised skin tolerates a garment far better, and a soft cotton layer underneath helps if you are prone to irritation in a fold.

When compression is the better answer
Shapewear and compression are not the same thing. Shapewear manages shape; graduated compression manages circulation and swelling. If your legs swell as well as sag, or you are recovering from a procedure, look at recovery compression on our sister site rather than a shaping garment.
We also cover the difference between compression and shapewear in more detail in compression garments vs shapewear for loose skin.
Not sure what size you need after losing weight?
If you're choosing compression leggings, measure again first: your ankle, calf and thigh have probably changed. Our free size finder compares five brands' official size charts (Rejuva, JOBST, SIGVARIS, VIM & VIGR and CzSalus) from one set of measurements.
